Whangateau HarbourCare Group (Inc.)
About WHCG
Whangateau HarbourCare Group (WHCG) is a volunteer organisation helping community to work together to sustainably manage and protect the Whangateau Harbour and its catchment. WHCG was incorporated in 2000, but its roots go back as far as the 1930's, when community rallied together in opposition to sand mining and sewage discharge in the harbour.
WHCG covers the Whangateau catchment, which is 4190 hectares, and the harbour area, which is one of the largest estuaries on Rodney’s north-east coastline. WHCG works to positively impact the harbour and its catchment in multiple ways - by acting as a watchdog for damaging activities and by kickstarting and supporting community initiatives to care for the moana and the whenua. This includes pest control, riparian planting and environmental monitoring.
The Group has a dedicated Committee of 12 members, with individuals heading up different focus areas such as water quality, weed control, native revegetation and birdlife conservation.
WHCG involves itself in local planning issues with the Auckland Council related to the Harbour and its catchment, and remains dedicated to preventing the excesses which can destroy this unique environment.

Roger was deeply passionate about Whangateau Harbour, instigating regular cockle counting and sediment monitoring in the Harbour, and weeding on Horseshoe Island.
HarbourCare Office
The Whangateau HarbourCare Group has an Office established in the old Meiklejohn house in Lew’s Bay, Whangateau. The space is shared by the property owner’s small shop, which sells produce from the farm.
